Today was Dustin Ackley's first game, and I was fortunate enough to get tickets. Everyone has been waiting for him to get called up and his first game was no disappointment. After seeing the way that he played today, I am confident that he will help us to add some offense to a team that has struggled a lot offensively. He has been able to kill it in the minor leagues, and I assume that he will be able to do pretty well in the big leagues.
He made solid contact in all of his at bats today and he looked very good. His single in his first major league at bat surely boosted his confidence. In his second at bat he had a solid pop out/line drive to left field that looked like it could have dropped for a hit, but was caught by the left fielder.
The idea of having a lineup that goes Ichiro, Ackley, Smoak to start is a really interesting prospect. If we were able to get a reliable 3 hitter, then Smoak could even move to fourth since he does not hit for average but does hit for for power.
If Mike Carp can continue to play at a high level, or Halman keeps hitting, we could have a front half of the lineup that actually could scare some teams, which is a prospect that we have not had in a very long time. In all, Ackley's first major league game looked pretty great and it is exciting to see him prove that he can at least make content on major league pitches.
